Section 1 - Tu 4-5

Hello and welcome to the #1 Section!!! Yes, that's right, we are number one for a reason. This class will be an awesome break from all your hard (or easy) engineering classes. You will get a chance to relax, as Duran, Duran says (though we don't mean it in the same sense you can look up lyrics if you like) and have some fun! Remember how exciting school was in elementary school? We'll be playing games, chatting, doing arts & crafts, and of course, learning (throughout all of these activities) about how awesome it is to be an engineer. If weather permits, we will hold class outside (class indoors = boring). We're excited to meet you all and hope you enjoy this class!

Christina Soelystio

Christina Soelystio

Major: Chemical Engineering
Year: Super-Senior
Involved in: BISA, Tau Beta Pi (not much for the past 2 semesters)
About me: So I 'graduated' last May and believe me I was sad!! I feel envious of all the freshmen. You guys have 4 more years to enjoy Cal *wink* and yes, Cal is enjoyable. Anyway, seems like I'm the only instructor from Chemical Engineering, so bombard me with chemistry questions (kidding, I'm bad at Chemistry). I love traveling. Being on the plane never ceases to give me the thrills. I am also a chill person and people may mistake that as indifference, but really I'm not like that. Approach me and you'll see =)
Contact me about: Chemical Engineering courses, traveling, time management, the art of relaxation

Jennifer Wang

Jennifer Wang

Major: Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Year: Senior
Involved in: AWE, SWE, HKN, TBP, volunteering at Emerson Elementary, Javanese Gamelan, tutoring at the dorms
About me: I just spent the last semester in Spain and am excited to return to Berkeley to help out new engineers. I grew up in Southern California and really enjoy the completely new and crazy atmosphere at Berkeley. I love gelato, so if you want to take me out to some gelato and chat some Spanish, let me know! But you can also just chat in Spanish (or English or Mandarin) with me if you don't want to buy me gelato. I also love art, music (all types), yoga, cooking, dancing like a fool, and crosswords. I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone!
Contact me about: Studying abroad, music (I'm hopefully getting a minor in it), internships, living life

Section 2 - Tu 5-6

Hi E98-ers,We'd like to welcome you to take this class because it'll be really informative and fun. Our section will be especially AWESOME. A little about us: Between the three of us, we cover 4.5 engineering majors (engineering undeclared is 0.5) and we're involved in an incredible number of clubs and groups that we could rant about for hours. We've also done almost everything you could do during summers, like classes, research, internships, or bumming around. We're out to teach you, not to get you, so if you don't get on our bad side, we'll have a great time!

George Chin

George Chia-Yu Chin

Major: Civil and Environmental Engineering & Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
Year: Junior
Involved in: Cal Judo, Berkeley Tzu Ching, ASUC Art Studio (Pottery)
About me: I am probably one of the most discriminating people ever about foods. I don't eat any fruits besides watermelon and banana (and just tried strawberry the first time in my life about 2 weeks ago). I don't eat any raw food at all (like salad, sashimi, etc..) and I just have a hard time accepting non-asian food. Because of that you'll probably find me eating the same food every single day or starving somewhere on campus. Having said that, I seen to have a bottomless pit for dim sum, ice cream, chips, and senbei. I am obsessed about tea, cute puppies and kittens, ninjas and samurais, Final Fantasy, and SF Japantown. I am really good with maps and directions and normally walk at 3x the speed of everyone else around me. In my spare time I like to go camping at Yosemite (or anywhere outdoors), read manga and fiction works, make tea, and cook inedible food.
Contact me about: Doubling in College of Engineering, Dim Sum spots around Oakland and SF, Places to hang out in SF Japantown.

About me: I'm a senior in mechanical engineering (a pretty average engineer), and I've been in or in touch with all the related engineering societies. I took this class in my freshman year, and taught it last year, and I really love teaching. I love good food, board games, movies, and just hanging out with friends. I also love to play frisbee, just for fun, so call me and maybe we can play sometime. Hope you have a great time in E98!
Contact me about: You can ask me about all kinds of things, like housing, scheduling, clubs, research, internships, etc.

Mike Lin

Mike Lin

Major: Bioengineering
Year: Senior
Involved in: BMUN (Berkeley Model United Nations), BMES (Biomedical Engineering Society)
About me: This decal is awesome and it very well may be the most valuable course you take. So about me... a few things I really enjoy are swimming, movies, and meeting up for meals. Since middle school, I've had a passion for healthcare/medicine and am exploring the field through doing research, shadowing physicians, and volunteering in the ER. Academics aside, my two best semesters have been my 1st (freshman Mike- excited) and 5th (studied in Copenhagen- amazing) semester. I'm looking forward to helping you make the most of your time here!
Contact me about: Studying abroad, career aspirations in medicine, engineering outreach activities, BMUN, BMES

Section 3 - W 4-5

At heart, all people have the desire to create, but they often suppress their creative instincts in the routine of ordinary life. In doing this, people miss out on an essential part of the richness of human life.We seek to embrace our humanity by exercising our creativity; and we invite incoming students to think of all acts, even ordinary ones, as opportunities for expressive work. We promise that we will try to humanize the Cal Engineering experience and that we will try to make E98 uniquely enriching for our students. [And we might bring goodies to class!]

Kimberly Needham

Kimberly Needham

Major: Industrial Engineering
Year: Senior
Involved in: Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE), EJC Alumni Relations, Cal Cycling Club, Co-op
About me: Half my day is spent in a desk, and half is spent in the kitchen. I love to cook and bake (come ready for some delicious treats in class...)! Once a week I even get to cook for more than 40 people in my co-op (where the food is delicious and the randomly themed dance parties keep me going). I also enjoy cycling through the Berkeley hills and getting up early to go swimming. In fact, I love getting up early and can't sleep past 8. I find sleeping boring and can't sit still. Consequently, whenever I have free time, I go randomly walking around and exploring Berkeley (I have found some cool spots on Northside and spiffy food places this way). Overall, I am energetic, obsessively organized, and super easy-going.

Margaret Wei

Margaret Wei

Major: Bioengineering
Year: Junior
Involved in: BMES, TBP, EJC, Mofrad Lab
About me: Hello my name is Margaret aka GAR! My favorite gummy bear is the green one. Among the list of things that delight and amuse me are robots, really short fat ugly things like bulldog puppies, babies and thoughts of baby stealing, motorcycles, and really tall skinny nerdy GSI's with glasses. I can spread my toes out really wide and I can lick my elbow. I love fording across Strawberry Creek next to Sather Gate. It makes me feel all rugged, like I'm fending for myself in the wilderness. When I grow up I'm going to open the Margaspread Margarine Company. I was once attacked my ninja squirrels outside of VLSB.
Contact me about: Good places to eat around Berkeley, IM teams, Habitat for Humanity, Cal Archery, How to cut your own hair, motorcycle license obtaining, skydiving

Steven Zhao

Steven Zhao

Major: Bioengineering
Year: Junior
Involved in: BioMedical Engineering Society, Engineers' Joint Council, Tau Beta Pi
About me: I started out at Cal thinking I would be a premed with a bioengineering degree. As the semesters have gone by, I've realized that I'm more of a bioengineer taking premed classes…and MCATs…and med-school apps…go figure? I was born in China, but moved to Fremont (I'm sure you all know it as the end of the BART line) when I was 4, and have lived in the beautiful Bay Area ever since. I'm a big fan of pro football, and play pickup games whenever possible. When that's not available, midnight rugby helps fill the tackling void in my heart. On the more intellectual side, I enjoy speech and debate as well as quiz bowl (I once tried out for Jeopardy!), but haven't done much of either since high school. I am currently doing research in the Healy lab involving micropatterning surfaces to control cell adhesion and differentiation. Feel free to bring any and all questions to me! If I don't know the answer, I'll help you find someone who does. I look forward to a great year of E98!
Contact me about: Undergraduate research opportunities, pre-med requirements, ways to get involved on campus, travelling, & IM sports

Section 6 - W 5-6

It is a little known fact that Carey, Christina, and Ben were once a tremendous trio of treasure hunters. They scoured the globe for strange and shiny things. They possessed such fame that their escapades became the stuff of fairy tales, myths, and urban legends everywhere. Then, one day, after months of searching for the rumored "Treasure Map of All Treasure Maps ", they found it. Only to discover that instead of a map, it bore only the words "Share the Wealth". Carey, Christina, and Ben decided to take those three strange words to heart, quit the treasure hunting business, and donated their collection of strange shiny things to the local museum. The trio can now be found "sharing the wealth" in their Wednesday afternoon E98 section. Rumor has it, if asked nicely, they may even regale their class with a story or two.

Christina Sedighi

Christina Sedighi

Major: Civil and Environmental Engineering
Year: Senior
Involved in: Tau Beta Pi (TBP), Chi Epsilon (XE), ASCE, ASC Construction Management Competition, Hathaway Dinwiddie (General Contractor)
About me: I love my hometown in Texas, but I've always wanted to go out of state for college- I *heart* UC Berkeley (minus some of the sketchy aspects of the actual city of Berkeley). I love maximizing my number of waking hours and keeping busy- the world made sense the day I started using Google Calendar. I'm not a fan of quiet, so I constantly surround myself with people or music (it helps to live on Frat Row). I'm generally optimistic and find it worthless to dwell on things- so if you ever need a pick-me-up, come find me! I may seem like I'm stressed all the time, but that's just me working better under pressure. I believe that people thrive when they find their niche, so never stop experiencing new things until you find yours!
Contact me about: Working while schooling, being an out-of-state student, getting involved in engineering student societies, the Career Center

Carey Lee

Carey the Lee

Major: Mechanical Engineering
Year: Senior - wow, where has the time gone?!
Involved in: Tau Beta Pi, Aikido, Cal Ultimate (Pie Queens)
About me: So actually I'm not the only Lee teaching E98, but Carey "one of the" Lee(s) just doesn't have the same ring, you know? Anyway, I started my Cal career as a chem major, and I have since found my way to Mech E. I find being an engineer really kind of exciting and enjoyable, especially if you surround yourself with awesome people. I am a happy person, I like to sleep a lot, and I think I have a short attention span. I really enjoy mushrooms, sunny skies with a slight breeze, project classes, hazelnut coffee from terrace cafe, and "berkeley time."
Contact me about: Oh anything! Including but not limited to research, working the library, working as a reader, good eateries on west side, classes at the YWCA, the bus lines...

Sam Woodard

Sam Woodard

Major: Mechanical Engineering, minor in Computer Science
Year: Senior
Involved in: Pi Tau Sigma, ASME, EJC, Club Ultimate Frisbee (UGMO), Cal Cycling Club
About me: I am not exactly sure how I ended up as an engineer, but I now realizethat there is nothing that I would rather have studied. There isnothing more exciting than having the power to design insanely complexmachines that can solve some of the most important problems in theworld. I enjoy mechanical engineering because I can make things that Ican physically interact with, but I believe that the real power willcome from giving things intellectual power, which is where computerscience comes in.I have many interests, which has lead me down many paths, so I havelearned a lot about getting involved in different activities. Thething that I love the most is athletics, especially running. I was onthe club ultimate team, UGMO, but an injury has prevented me fromrunning, so since then I have done cycling and a lot of swimming. Ihave experience with a lot of athletic opportunities at Cal from D1 toclub to IM to PE, so talk to me about doing some athletics, it reallyhelps take the edge off problem sets. Beyond athletics, I have foundthat engineering clubs are a great way to be part of a team with agoal that is related to what I am studying. Getting involved inengineering student groups has been one of the most rewardingexperiences at Cal and they have taught me some really important lifelessons that I would have never learned in class. My path to where I am now has been long and winding. I wanted to dosomething involving athletics, so I thought about coaching andexercise physiology, which then lead me to consider medical school. Then I wanted to do something with more open ended problem solving, which lead to engineering, but even after that I have considered goinginto teaching, and now I am interested in entrepreneurship and thebusiness side of engineering. The main point is E98 is a greatopportunity to consider your path and start out in the rightdirection, and I cant wait to help you out.
Contact me about: Figuring out what you want to study, athletics, minoring and double majoring (MECS), entrepenuership and business, getting involved in engineering club projects.

Major: Bioengineering and Rhetoric
Year: Junior
Involved in: Associated Students University of California (ASUC) Senate, Engineering World Health, Good Samaritan Medical Mission Vietnam, Vietnamese Student Association, Cal Hep B Free, Global Medical Brigades, Bioengineering Honor Society, Tau Beta Pi, and Stem Cell/Tissue Engineering Research.
About me:Some of my hobbies include driving, hanging out and enjoying life, actively pursuing service projects, running, spontaneously dancing, and, soon to be added to the list, giving you folks some helpful advice, so one day I can say I have somehow contributed to you, you who will be the next world renowned scientists and engineers who will save humanity, who will lead countries as powerful politicians, and you who will provide us with countless moments of entertainment and "club bangers". My philosophy for college life is that we should enjoy our time here and embrace the experience rather than see undergrad as one intermediate step. I understand this is much easier said than done but maybe this is something we can both work on together. That being said, I recommend that you keep an open mind to everything you can experience here at Cal and try different activities, jobs, career-options, and things that you would not imagine that you would ever do. Break out of your former comfort zones. My friend always told me "Don't regret the things you did, regret the things you didn't do". College is honestly one of the best and most practical times in your life to discover your limits, your talents, and your abilities. Start early and please avoid adhering to the conceptualization of life here as "tracks".
Contact me about: Hang out spots; working on service projects for the Cal community, local community, and global community; collegiate student government, doubling in L&S

Michelle Lew

Michelle Danger Lew

Major: Industrial Engineering and Operations Research and Economics
Year: Senior
Involved in: SWE, TBP, APM, IIE, UC Martial Arts Program, Cal Gymnastics Club
About me: All right, my favorite clubs are, in order--just kidding, I love all my clubs. I'm involved in quite a few engineering societies, and it's not just because I'm crazy--ask me why! I'm doubling in IEOR and Econ, but when I first came to Cal, I also considered studying: statistics, EECS, business administration, CEE, film studies, Spanish, computer science, applied math, and others. That certainly doesn't mean I'm an expert on the curriculum for any of those majors, but I can certainly give you some advice on how to research those majors and how to decide which is right for you. I can also help you out with navigating the L&S requirements and paperwork if you're planning to get a double major from two different colleges. I've worked for the federal government and the private sector and can give you some pretty good tips on how to get an internship and make a good impression in the workplace, especially for you ambitious freshmen who want to get an internship as soon as you finish your first year. Most importantly, I'm excited to help you ENJOY UC Berkeley Engineering--there's a lot more to life than problem sets!

About me: I am loud. I am quiet. I am happy. I am sad. I am out there. I am in here. I love to be with my friends. I love to sit and ponder by myself. I love the Beatles. I love the Rolling Stones. I am yin and yang. I am in constant flux. But whatever changes, some things will never change. I love movies and remembering inane trivia. I want to be some kind of artist someday, and I want to write a dystopia novel along the lines of Brave New World or 1984. Currently my favorite TV shows are House, M.D. and The Office. I love trying new things and testing my limits. I love proverbs and sayings. Every day is a new day, and everything happens for a reason. Be the change you wish to see in the world, but never forget the little people that got you where you are. Don't worry, be happy!

Monica Tanza

Monica Tanza

Major: Mechanical Engineering
Year: Senior
Involved in: SWE, Berkeley Innovation, IAESTE, PTS, Research
About me: I grew up in Santa Cruz so I really miss the beach here in Berkeley. I decided to study mechanical engineering so that I could go into sustainable product design. I have been able to get my fill of design with extracurriculars as well as electives. I like cramming my schedule full of as much stuff as I can possibly do so I've been involved with a lot of different societies here at Berkeley, although they are usually either engineering or environmentally focused. I also make a point to go out with friends every weekend, because although we are here to learn, you learn the most outside of class. I have a massive reading list full of novels that I barely get a chance to chip through and I also enjoy sewing, especially making old t-shirts into new ones. I am also obsessed with Cal basketball, especially now that Ben Braun is gone, and even though I'm busy, I clear my schedule for all the home games.

Jean Lai

Jean Lai

Major: Industrial Engineering and Operations Research
Year: Junior
Involved in: Undergraduate Research Opportunities, The Berkeley Group, E98
About me: I also used to be a CalSO counselor (I can teach you theTimewarp if you missed it) so you can tell I really like working with newstudents. Aside from timewarping and leading campus tours during CalSO, Istay active with ballet classes and I was on the official Cal Sailing Teamuntil scheduling commitments made that impossible. I had never sailedbefore in my life but had a great time with the team traveling up and downthe coast to compete with other schools. What I love most about college isall the new random organizations you can join and all the differentexperiences so that's what I've tried to explore most here at Berkeley. That was about my active side; my lazy side loves my bus pass that I useto go to and from campus, grocery shopping, and lots of other adventures.

Ebby Abirebrahimi

Ebby Amirebrahimi

Major: Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Economics
Year: Junior
Involved in: HKN, CS research
About me: Hey! I grew up in Silicon Valley and it seemed to influence my decision to major in EECS quite heavily because I think new technology is totally awesome. Actually, when I first came to Cal my intention was to switch to physics or econ, but the EECS classes become far too interesting to let go of. We can do so much with the technology out there to improve our social lives, health, and even economy! Berkeley Engineering seemed quite intimidating to me at first, but I think as long as you let your interests drive you, things tend to work out well.I really enjoy getting hands on experience. So far I've done an EE internship at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and a CS internship at SAP Labs. This summer I'm interning in software engineering at Apple. I also have a lot of interest in startups and try to contribute to some projects here and there. I just love being busy and working on stuff! My favorite sports are soccer and tennis, though I tend to be better at watching than playing them :-) I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and enjoy snowboarding in the winter. I'm also a news junkie for some reason and can talk for hours on politics, the economy, etc. Lastly, HKN is awesome...so all you EECS majors should join when you become juniors!

Ahmad Namvargolian

Ahmad Namvargolian

Major: Materials Science and Engineering & Bioengineering (Joint/Double)
Year: Senior
Involved in: Research at LBNL, Society of Engineering Sciences, UC Martial Arts Program (Cal Judo!), Studying.
About me: Before coming to Cal, I used to live in a faraway land called Colorado. Since us Coloradoans grow up 1000 miles away from the nearest ocean, none of us can swim. Consequently, we must compensate by spending our time in the Mountains: skiing, camping, fishing, etc. Here at Cal, I started off as Engineering Undeclared, and declared as Materials Science/ Bioengineering joint major two weeks after the declare deadline. I relish the elegance of the physics and chemistry of Materials Science and love how material scientists have managed to organize and stylistically manipulate complicated natural systems. I have been involved in research up on the hill at LBNL for over 2 years. Our research is focused on producing the next generation of bone and hip implants which, after a couple of months from implantation, turn into real bone!
Contact me about: Finding research, effective studying, Materials Science, Engineering Science Majors, world politics, good books to read (I used to work at Barnes & Noble!), Alvin Toffler, Grad School, symbols in architecture, how to get a 4-star hotel at a 1-star price using Priceline, being "out-of-state".

David Liang

David Liang

Major: Bioengineering
Year: Junior
Involved in: Tau Beta Pi (TBP), Engineering World Health (EWH), Bioengineering Honor Society (BioEHS), Pre-Medical Honor Society (PMHS), Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES)
About me: Some people say I'm too busy. Other people say I'm a workaholic. I like to think that I'm neither - I just like being productive. That said, I've enjoyed being involved in a lot of stuff, most of which have ended up being BioE-related (surprise, surprise). Toss in my current plans on going to medical school, and you somehow end up with me: the BioE pre-med who's not too pre-medy. My favorite stuff include badminton, basketball, listening to all kinds of music (though I'm bigger on pop and R&B than country and rap), gelato, strawberry ice cream, and movies. Oh, and Starcraft. I'm probably the most hardcore Starcraft guy you'll ever meet - you can either take my word for it or actually ask me about it, of which I could spend a whole E98 semester talking about. In other news, I've taken too many pre-med classes, and I've had experience doing research at UCSF, Abbott Labs, and the Cal BioPOETS lab. Anyway, just talk to me. I like meeting people.

Contact me about: Anything! Personal favorites: any BioE-related stuff (research, coursework, extracurricular activities/clubs), professional development (resumes, interviews, etc.), med school things

About me: Born and raised in the great ol, state of Indiana, I am a diehard fan of Boilermaker football and basketball, as well as all things related to corn. However, coming to Berkeley was one of the best choices that I have ever made, and I,ve enjoyed getting involved in just a small sampling of the wide variety of opportunities that Cal has to offer. Most of my free time during the school year is spent teaching a study group at the Student Learning Center for students enrolled in Chem 1A, one of the first major roadblocks for any pre-med student. Throw in my involvement at the Schaffer lab, and you can see where I,m headed with this gig , as of now, I,m basically pre-graduate school, and I hope to eventually become a professor. Some of my other favorite things include playing tennis, reading all sorts of books, listening to music, climbing trees, going on outdoor adventures, Thai food, and traveling. I am also a huge science nerd, and I love learning about why the world works the way it does. Anyhow, I,m looking forward to being involved in E98, and I,m excited to meet all of you this fall!

Section 12 - W 4-5

"Live life fully while you're here. Experience everything. Take care of yourself and your friends. Have fun, be crazy, be weird. Go out and screw up! You're going to anyway, so you might as well enjoy the process. Take the opportunity to learn from your mistakes: find the cause of your problem and eliminate it. Don't try to be perfect; just be an excellent example of being human." Random Person Our section is the place to be if ur chill, laid back, and unique. No judging, bad attitude, nor cliques allowed in our section. Only good vibes and awesome engineers.

About me: I'm not your typical engineer student. I'm an engineer trappedin an artist's body. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE learning all about trussesand concrete, but I would rather spend long hours drawing on my hand undera tree and staring at the sun dust. No, seriously I really want to be aCivil Engineer and I study architecture afterwards so I fill the earthwith tight looking buildings that are very structurally safe andenvironmental friendly, and extremely eye-catching of course.Other of my interests are:* I love being on airplanes (airplane food is SO good)* I want a tattoo and piercings(i'm waiting for the painless versions)* I want to be an acrobat or a gymnast* Successfully getting a tan :(

About me: I'm not good at writing about myself, even though all my friends say that I'm totally arrogant. (house of lies, I swear) As far as school goes, I transferred from L&S after loving my first CS class here. Since then I've discovered that CS is a lot harder than was initially presented, but it's still an awesome subject. I've awesome found that Econ is a good subject to dab in, since I love the interaction between companies/people, especially in the context of game theory. It's also a really good way to procrastinate on programming projects and a good break sometimes from the computer.I definitely have some form of OCD, I can never take steps only 1 at a time, and I know which sets of stairs are even/odd. I also have a theory on compatibility with certain rooms for midterms/finals. I also have many other theories regarding the interactions between everyday actions and classes, but research is still ongoing. Since entering Berkeley, I've picked up the talent (curse??) of being able to fall asleep in most situations. If you ever watch a webcast and the camera stops moving entirely, that also could be me falling asleep on my job. Otherwise, you'll probably see me in CS and Econ classes - most likely asleep or falling asleep. For fun, I watch copious amounts of anime/drama and various Korean variety shows on Youtube. I hope to pick up all the Asian languages, but the budget cuts have severely hindered my quest to learn Chinese. Music tastes ranges through many genres, but I mostly listen to what I find to be interesting. Badminton is probably the closest thing I get to exercise (except for my tendency to pick classes across campus from each other), but lately (the last year and a half), I've been lazy and have ignored the existence of the RSF. Feel free to drag me in if you want to play a game! Other awesome things to me are: Orson Scott Card books, game theory, videogames, Mahjong, board games, poker and karaoke!
