Joanna Zhang
Major: Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, minor in Chinese
Year: Junior
Involved in: Alpha Pi Mu, Institute of Industrial Engineers, Educational Technology Services, Acts2Fellowship, Gracepoint Fellowship Church, Access Growth LLC, Research at Pomona College.
About me: I grew up in China in a city called Xi’an (famous for its underground Empire and Terracotta Warriors!!). I moved several times after coming to the States. Among all the places, Berkeley is by far my favorite. Let’s see, some of the things that make my life so wonderful—hanging out with friends and meeting new people (I’m a super Extrovert), trying out all kinds of delicious food (especially dessert), playing with my two adorable Pit Bulls, going on scary roller coasters, listening to Asian music, watching movies, bright colors, traveling and definitely laughing. Coming into Cal as a civil engineer, I switched to IEOR at the end of Freshman Year and absolutely LOVE this major. If you have any questions regarding IEOR or deciding a major/minor, please don’t hesitate to ask me because I did a lot of “research” on it. Also if you want some advices regarding clubs/activities/internships, I will definitely share with you my experiences. Lastly, I’m here to help you explore what Berkeley Engineering has to offer, but more importantly, to help you ENJOY this journey at Cal. I’m excited about this E98!!
Contact me about: IEOR, picking a minor, clubs, research, internships, housing, scheduling, good restaurants around here, Christian fellowships, or about ANYTHING…

Major: Industrial Engineering and Operations Research
Year: Junior
Involved in: SWE, IIE, IM Soccer
About me:I really love Berkeley and am excited to show you all the great
things it has to offer, particularly the awesome food and even more
awesome people. I’ve lived in Monterey the longest (NorCal for life!),
but I lived in Washington D.C. for 5 years, too. I love to travel and
want to study/intern/work abroad. Other random interests include: the
ocean, fashion, Liverpool soccer, the Colbert Report, movies, and
pondering what I want to do with my life…I’m really good at that one. I
think I’ve considered studying every major at Cal, certainly every
engineering major, so I know a lot of stuff about all of them. Right now,
I want to get a simultaneous degree in economics because it still relates
to my major and I enjoy humanities classes just as much as engineering
ones (as long as 20 page papers aren’t involved). My main hobby is music
(yes, I also considered being a music major) – I play flute and piano –
and I try to keep practicing even with a busy school schedule.
(Apparently, I really like parentheticals, too.) Go Bears!
Contact me about: student groups, simultaneous degrees, Berkeley
restaurants, intramural sports, playing an instrument at Cal, fun stuff to
do in SF, coming in undeclared, class scheduling, finding housing, and
more! |

Michelle Marcus
Major: Bioengineering Year: Junior
Involved in: Tau Beta Pi, previously SWE, BMES
About me: Some of my friends would tell you I'm really about 7 years old. I don't know if that's true but I tend to get overly excited about stupid things, break into song randomly, and otherwise be ridiculous. However, I might actually have some "older and wiser" knowledge to share. I've been really involved in Tau Beta Pi the past three semesters and I've met a lot of engineers with a variety of perspectives. Also, I work about 15 hours a week in an integrative biology lab, so I know something about research. I like meeting new people and I'm looking forward to helping freshman avoid my mistakes...
Contact me about: bioengineering courses, research, physical activity, surviving the dorms and why you shouldn't live there two years in a row |

Justin Tsui
Major: Civil and Environmental Engineering
Year: Senior
Involved in: Chi Epsilon, CAL Construction Team, TruElement
About me: I like sports, dance, music, food, and just kickin’ it. Speaking of kicks, I know a lot about sneakers (especially nike dunks) and I am a complete sucker for graphic tees. I’m a bay area city kid. I’m from Daly City and spent a lot of time in San Francisco. When I’m not studying (which is often), I dance hip hop with the campus team TruElement. I also do stuff on the officer team for Chi Epsilon, the civil engineering honor society. In my spare time I like to skateboard, play ball (any ball, I’m game), watch TV, movies, and explore.
Contact me about: Engineering Undeclared, San Francisco, shoes, taking me out on Friday night. |
 | Major: Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mathematics Year: Junior Involved in: TBP, Cal Habitat for Humanity, OASES (Oakland Asian Student Educational Services), Cal Robocup About me: I'm your pretty typical engineer; I like math, I like robots, and I'm surgically attached to my computer. I also have a liking for linguistics related stuff. I've taken a foreign language class here and several linguistics classes, so feel free to talk to me about them. I'm also big on movies. If you like movies from the 70's, then I love you. Contact me about: Humanities courses, doubling in L&S, math classes |

Major: Mechanical Engineering, minor in Computer Science Year: Senior Involved in: Pi Tau Sigma, ASME, EJC, Club Ultimate Frisbee (UGMO), Cal Cycling Club About me: I am not exactly sure how I ended up as an engineer, but I now realizethat there is nothing that I would rather have studied. There isnothing more exciting than having the power to design insanely complexmachines that can solve some of the most important problems in theworld. I enjoy mechanical engineering because I can make things that Ican physically interact with, but I believe that the real power willcome from giving things intellectual power, which is where computerscience comes in.I have many interests, which has lead me down many paths, so I havelearned a lot about getting involved in different activities. Thething that I love the most is athletics, especially running. I was onthe club ultimate team, UGMO, but an injury has prevented me fromrunning, so since then I have done cycling and a lot of swimming. Ihave experience with a lot of athletic opportunities at Cal from D1 toclub to IM to PE, so talk to me about doing some athletics, it reallyhelps take the edge off problem sets. Beyond athletics, I have foundthat engineering clubs are a great way to be part of a team with agoal that is related to what I am studying. Getting involved inengineering student groups has been one of the most rewardingexperiences at Cal and they have taught me some really important lifelessons that I would have never learned in class. My path to where I am now has been long and winding. I wanted to dosomething involving athletics, so I thought about coaching andexercise physiology, which then lead me to consider medical school. Then I wanted to do something with more open ended problem solving, which lead to engineering, but even after that I have considered goinginto teaching, and now I am interested in entrepreneurship and thebusiness side of engineering. The main point is E98 is a greatopportunity to consider your path and start out in the rightdirection, and I cant wait to help you out. Contact me about: Figuring out what you want to study, athletics, minoring and double majoring (MECS), entrepenuership and business, getting involved in engineering club projects. |

Major: Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Economics Year: Junior
Involved in: CS research, random stuff About me: Hey! I grew up in Silicon Valley and it seemed to influence my decision to major in EECS quite heavily because I think new technology is totally awesome. Actually, when I first came to Cal my intention was to switch to physics or econ, but the EECS classes become far too interesting to let go of. We can do so much with the technology out there to improve our social lives, health, and even economy! Berkeley Engineering seemed quite intimidating to me at first, but I think as long as you let your interests drive you, things tend to work out well.I really enjoy getting hands on experience. So far I've done an EE internship at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and a CS internship at SAP Labs. This summer I'm interning in software engineering at Apple. I also have a lot of interest in startups and try to contribute to some projects here and there. I just love being busy and working on stuff! My favorite sports are soccer and tennis, though I tend to be better at watching than playing them :-) I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and enjoy snowboarding in the winter. I'm also a news junkie for some reason and can talk for hours on politics, the economy, etc.
